CHAPTER TWELVE

After returning to the island and offloading the Crackerbox, the team split up to make their own preparations. Karina and Rogers arrived at the barracks, where rows of soldiers snapped to attention. Rogers met each of their eyes, seeing the fear and excitement. Word had already spread of a pending attack; he was proud to see that the barracks were packed, and the fighters were ready for what was to come. None had turned and ran, everyone reporting for duty.

"No more running; we will make our stand here on this island," Rogers began. "We do this not just for ourselves but for generations to come. Know that no matter what happens, you fight for the future of humankind."

The soldiers listened raptly as Rogers laid out the defense plans. When he finished, he said, "Now let's send those alien bastards back to the hell they came from."

A ragged cheer went up. Rogers clasped hands with each soldier, pride swelling in his chest. Come what may, they would give everything for this final fight.

The officers dispersed to carry out her orders. Karina turned to Rogers; her lips set in a determined line. "Our heavy weapons teams are ready. We will deploy all of our guns. I will personally train the crews myself."

Rogers met her gaze, she nodded to him and added. "The main objective is taking down the dropships. Kill as many as possible in the air."

Rogers nodded. Then she donned her helmet and ran off to join her teams.

Rogers retreated to the command center to brief the rest of the base defenses.

James stood in his corner watch tower; his fighters lined up on the walls to the left and right of him. The attack was imminent, and nobody on the wall dared look away from the skies.

He glanced at the massive rail guns that replaced the fort's antiquated cannons. Their long barrels jutted skyward, aimed out across the straits, ready to unleash their devastating firepower. These weapons were their only hope against the Vod's superior numbers and technology.

James visualized the chaos to come, the thunderous barrage from the rail guns, the alien dropships bursting into flames and crashing into the frigid waters below. They had to hold the line here or die trying. There was no retreating, no surrendering - humanity's very survival depended on them.

The sound of footsteps drew James' attention. He turned to see Rogers approaching, decked out in full tactical gear, rifle in hand.

"I talked to Masterson; he will lead the fight up here; there is no reason to have shooters cooped up in the command bunker if all the work is happening outside. I'm going down to shore to join the ground forces," Rogers said, his voice steady despite the coming storm. "You and Duke will coordinate the air defense from up here with Karina."

“Karina knows what you’re doing?” James asked. “She won’t like that.”

“Not yet,” Rogers replied. “Those boys down there don’t have a clue how much they are biting off. They’ll need any help I can give them.
